Mobile HI FI Tour Launch:
Saturday, September 26, 2009
Although officially designated by the city of Los Angeles in 2002, Historic Filipinotown (”Hi Fi” or “P-Town”) has few cultural or physical markers to indicate the area’s status. On September 26, 2009, PDUB Productions, a collaborative digital media project between the Pilipino Workers’ Center (PWC), Public Matters, UCLA Center for REMAP, HyperCities and local youth, launched its Mobile HI FI Tours to give the public a better understanding of the neighborhood’s character, significance, and rich cultural history. The culminating events for the first year of PDUB Productions (link to About PDUB), collectively titled “KAHAPON, NGAYON at BUKAS ng HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN | HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN: YESTERDAY, TODAY+ TOMORROW,” were a resounding success. A steady crowd showed up, even on a 95 degree L.A. day. The action-packed day was full of activity, including the debut of the Mobile HI FI Immigrant’s Guides, the inaugural run of PWC’s jeepney (our biggest and coolest mobile media device!) presided over by Honorary Committee Chair and LA City Council President Eric Garcetti, and a Barrio Fiesta to cap the evening.

A press conference, volunteer training, event set-up – all before 1 pm!
Mobile HI FI Tour Launch: WALKING TOURS
The Mobile HI FI Tours took place from 1-6pm, offered as walking tours with interactive mobile devices and local longtime residents a+ fantastic City Year volunteers serving as guides.
Mobile HI FI Tour Launch: JEEPNEY TOURS
We also unveiled the PWC Jeepney, an original 1944 Willy’s Jeepney (link to Jeepney Watch page) by the Sarao Company in the Philippines that made its way to Los Angeles via Washington State. St. Columban Church’s Father Brannigan blessed the jeepney before it set off on its inaugural ride and tour, led by Honorary Committee Chair and LA City Council President Eric Garcetti.
PWC BARRIO FIESTA Fundraiser
After sunset, the festivities continued with a barrio fiesta in PWC’s own backyard, set against the downtown skyline. The celebration included delicious Filipino food courtesy of Neri’s Filipino Bakery and performances from The Fighting Cocks, Re-D.mer, (aka Michael Walker), Belle, Florante, Haranistas from Silver Lake Adult Day Health Care Center, among others.
Funds raised through ticket sales + sponsorships provided support for PWC’s ongoing programs, such as Pilipino Trafficking Victims, the COURAGE Campaign, Immigration Assistance and Advocacy, and Youth Media (PDUB Productions).
